MULBEKH MONASTERY ON A BIKE ON RENT
The Mulbekh monastery has two gompas for the two sects of Buddhism – Drukpa and Gelugkpa. To get to this place on a bike on rent one needs to travel 45kms away from Kargil and 260kms from the Leh town. To go biking at this destination one can take a bullet on rent either form Leh or from Sri Nagar. There is a nine-meter statue of Maitreya Buddha that catches the eyes of all visitors in this monastery. The two gompas are also connected to the palace of Rajah Kalon of Mulbekh.
HISTORY OF THIS MONASTERY:
The idol of Buddha placed here dates back to the 8th century and some believe it to be built during the period of Kushan. Kharoshti scripts are mainly found in the sculptor works of this monastery. There are also many relics and frescoes here making this monastery a charm with very valuable paintings. One also gets to see relics of some prized items of the ancient period. As Maitreya is famous as Chamba among the Buddhists, this monastery later gets the name Mulbekh Chamba.
