PHUGTAL MONASTERY BY BIKE ON RENT
Phugtal or Phugtal monastery is located in the Lungkak valley in the southeastern part of the Zanskar valley and is reachable by getting a bike on rent or by walking. The name of this monastery means cave of liberation. Built around 2500 years back, this monastery was built around the aim of inviting any number of saints to come and meditate here. This monastery is being looked after the Gelug School Of Tibetan Buddhism built in the 15th century by Jangsem Sherap Zangpo.
STRUCTURE OF THE MONASTERY
The honeycomb structure of the monastery takes everyone by surprise. The monastery has become a favorite biking point for all bikers who can get there by bike on rent from Sri Nagar. The cliffside structure of this monastery has a temple, prayer room, apartments and library with many sacred manuscripts. There are about 70 monks residing here always engaged in prayers and reciting chants. This monastery stays open all days of the week from 6 pm to 4 pm.
HOW TO GET TO PHUGTAL:
A lot of festivals are celebrated in this monastery every year. But the main festival celebrated is the Smonlam Chenmo which signifies the entry of the Buddhist New Year. So to get here on a bike, start with a 3 to 4 days trek + a road journey to Phugtal monastery. You can start from Icher until Anmu or up to Chah.

    Homestays are available at Ammu, Chah and Purne villages.
    A guest house in Phugtel Monastery is also available.

    You can also stay at Omasila Hotel at Padum near the Zanskar Valley.
